Several years ago I had a older mare that was 9 mths pregnant and all of a sudden started to pass blood in her urine. It got really bad and I took her to A&M. Long story short. They got the bleeding to stop and told me it was coming from one of her kidneys. They said if she started to bleed again it probably would be from the other one. She came home and 2 days later had her foal 35 days early. The baby survived and she raised him to about 3 mths and then she started to bleed again. We took her back up to the hospital and within three days she was having a hard time breathing and layed down and wouldn't get up. We made the tough decision to put her to sleep as we didn't want her to suffer any more. I was told that this was more common in the straight egyptians more than any other breed. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is this something that is genetic? The diagnosis was called idiopatheic renal hematuria. Forgive my spelling! Which means bleeding from the kidney and they don't know why.
Thanks
Jennifer

I had an older mare that began to bleed from her kidneys at about 17 I think, not SE. I had sold the mare 2 years earlier and when she began bleeding the woman asked if I wanted her back as they planned to put her down as 3/4 of one kidney had stopped working and they didn't know how long before they shut down entirely. I had her brought home. I put her on a special diet and cleared up the blood, bred her, she carried the foal to term without issues and no bleeding. I was going to skip a year as she was getting older, had basically one kidney, etc, but after the foal was a few months old she was bleeding again. I thought maybe the hormones from being preggers helped balance her body and was keeping her kidneys functioning so I tried to breed her again. Unfortunately she would get in foal but not hold it. I should not have waited...she lived about 3 more years, with only occassional bouts with bloody urine, mostly controlled by exercise and feed, and although the vets could not explain why she lived as long as she did as she had nearly no kidney function, she just liked being alive. Only when her weight started dropping and the bloody urine could not be managed, she was humanely euthanized. Again, not SE, and the only one in 22 years of my horse experience. She had 9 or 10 foals, none of them ever reported having the same issue.
Warm Regards,
Xena

Wow so sorry to hear about this, it's the first I have heard about this "maybe" affecting SE lines. I would like more insight if others have had this problem. Thanks and again so very sorry about both your mares. Sincerely, Lisa
