Does anyone know if this is a hereditary condition? We are working up Majiid in relation to his hives, scruffy coat and feet; although he is improving with a change in diet and an appropriate regimen of Tri-hist.

When Goldie was proven to have Cushings I asked the Dr on the board and at that time they were not sure if it could be inheireted or not-I am waiting for Desi to hit the same age as her Mom was and see if it shows up in her at the same time. Also they seem to think it may have something to do with the diet and I have changed to no grain diet for my horses.

Cushings is I believe a result of a tumor on the pars intermedia (middle part) of the pituitary and I just lost a mare to it after several years.. she was a gray and her sister and mother had melanomas so if the tendency to produce tumors is inheritable then I think there might be a genetic factor. It would be interesting to know if grays would have it more as they do with melanomas. Rather than staying away from grains I think we should keep our horses away from sugar, as in molasses, which seems to be everywhere. Good luck and Seasons Greetings!
