This isn't a very exciting 'variation' but.....here it is.

This is last years picture....this year the grey hairs have grown up over the pastern and made the foot look whiter.  I'm wondering if at some point she's going to look like she has a white sock (which isn't true and won't match her papers)!  I think it's the rabinco gene  gone crazy but what an odd place!

The same filly has an 'oil spill' look on her loin as well.  She looks like we dumped oil on her.  I'm supposing that's the sooty gene....maybe?

Horse colour genetics is a very complicated subject which I am only just beginning to study.  There are many Arabians with sabino colouration, so it could be that.  Or possibly rabicano.  I think splashed white would be less likely.  But sabino is the culprit when a foal like one Sue Spratt and Bev Jones had a year or two ago - "medicine hat".  All white with chestnut ears!!  There was a purebred in Australia some years ago that confounded everyone as he appeared white but both parents were solid coloured.  I think it was eventually proved that he was extreme sabino.

Interesting.  I had read only about 2 years ago that maximum sabino could cause a horse to look like R Khasper who you can see in the website below.  However, having found the website, I saw the picture of his son, Kholor by Design, who has been classified as "dominant white" (and not max sabino)(as now has R Khasper)

and in the link below there is a further link to a genetics article..  There are many pictures on her site

I have a mare that has these spots... we never noticed them at all... she is 3 this year and when we body clipped her there they were!  You can see them clearly in the pic I'm posting.  They are not just on her back or by her withers.... they are all over her.  I think they give her character!  She is a Botswana daughter ... don't know if the bloodlines would even have an effect on it or not.
It is NOT rain rot, is NOT a viral infection, this mare has a clean bill of health and stays in the barn and is groomed daily.

Click on the pic to enlarge it and you can see the spots better.
