A neighbor and I have been taking on a few kids each summer for lessons, and a couple years ago we had a little show at the end of summer so they could show off their talents. I didn't get to give lessons this year, but my neighbor did, and she had her show again. My kids, along with my son's best friend, also participated.

The show was very informal, but we had a nice-sized crowd. Classes included: PeeWee, Junior, Trail Class, a cake walk, Senior class, Extreme Cowboy Race, and a class called the Horse Showdown. In the Showdown, the kids got to dress up, and dress up their horses....they told the crowd about the horse they were presenting, and led it through obstacles. I didn't get pictures of the Extreme Cowboy Race, because it was too dark, but the senior kids raced their horses through obstacles, such as taking mail from a mail box, barrels, going over a tarp, figure eight and a race to the finish line up through the field.

Everyone had a blast. I thought some of you might enjoy seeing pictures from our fun day :) .

These photos are of Becky and Trevor---Trevor is a reg'd Standardbred, ex-racehorse. My friend Kathy, who owns him, was watching America's Funniest Animals on Animal Planet and was shocked to see him on one of the videos!

This is Princess, a 26 year old pony-cross mare ridden by Kathy's junior students. I love the picture of Chelsea riding her (at a trot) with her arms out.

You can see from a couple of these the obstacles for the trail class....there was a labyrinth, a bridge to ride over, a back-up "chute" of cones, etc.

These pictures are of Cassie, one of Kathy's senior kids...in the riding pic she's riding "Buck" a Paso Fino gelding. For the showdown, she presented "Mickey"....Mickey is a reg'd Arabian gelding that Kathy rescued. It has taken years to rehabilitate Mickey to the point that a child could handle him, and even then it takes someone special. He was so traumatized when Kathy first got him he would freeze up at every little thing. He is still not to the point he can be ridden...think of a horse with PTSD. He's loved all the same, and he looked beautiful in a halter I brought from him.

This is my son Troy with Taza Cindy, our SE mare....Troy didn't get to practice riding Cindy, so he handled her in-hand for the showdown and for the trail class. Cindy was great with him and while I'm disappointed we didn't get to show off one of our Arabs being ridden, we did show that they an also be polite, mannerly and handled kids and crowds of horses.

This was one of my favorites for the show....Chelses and "Minnie" a donkey dressed as a unicorn.

Minnie's great trick was jumping the bridge....LOL....she refuses to walk over it.
